Description
The design of reinforced masonry shear walls using both the Allowable Stress Design method and the Strength Design method is covered in this lesson. The requirements for both the design for overturning and the design for shear are explained. The prescriptive seismic detailing requirements for each of three reinforced masonry shear walls types, ordinary, intermediate, and special, are explained, with particular attention to special reinforced shear walls. The design process is illustrated with examples.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the three different types of reinforced masonry shear walls and the requirements for each type.
- Understand seismic design requirements for shear walls.
- Understand the design process for shear walls using the Allowable Stress Design method.
- Understand the design process for shear walls using the Strength Design method.

The TMS 402/602-16 (formerly designated as TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5 and TMS 602/ASCE 530.1/ASCE 6) has been released and adopted by the 2018 edition of the International Building Code and International Residential Code for the design and construction of structural masonry, masonry veneer, and glass unit masonry.
This lesson provides updates for the major updates and changes to the 2016 TMS 402/602, with a short review on changes that will be made in the 2018 International Building Code’s masonry provisions. The 1.5 hour video is presented by Dr. Richard M. Bennett, Chair of the Committee that developed these provisions.
This lesson is intended for designers, contractors, and others to help them understand the main updates made to these codes and standards from the earlier TMS 402/602-13 and the 2015 IBC. It is assumed that the user has familiarity with those earlier documents.

Anchor Bolt Design
This lesson covers the basis for these changes two major changes to the anchor bolt design provisions in the 2016 edition of TMS 402. One change was to increase the calculated shear crushing strength by 67%. The other change was to go from a linear interaction equation for combined bending and shear to an elliptical interaction equation.
