TMS 402/602-16 Code and Specification Update
The TMS 402/602-16 (formerly designated as TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5 and TMS 602/ASCE 530.1/ASCE 6) has been released and adopted by the 2018 edition of the International Building Code and International Residential Code for the design and construction of structural masonry, masonry veneer, and glass unit masonry.
This lesson provides updates for the major updates and changes to the 2016 TMS 402/602, with a short review on changes that will be made in the 2018 International Building Code’s masonry provisions. The 1.5 hour video is presented by Dr. Richard M. Bennett, Chair of the Committee that developed these provisions.
This lesson is intended for designers, contractors, and others to help them understand the main updates made to these codes and standards from the earlier TMS 402/602-13 and the 2015 IBC. It is assumed that the user has familiarity with those earlier documents.

TMS 402/602-22 Review #4: Masonry Veneer Requirement Changes in TMS 402/602-22, A Whole New Chapter
$80.00 Add to cartTMS 402/602-22 Review #4: Masonry Veneer Requirement Changes in TMS 402/602-22, A Whole New Chapter
The chapter on masonry veneer has been extensively revised and updated for the 2022 edition of TMS 402/602. Prescriptive requirements for both anchored and adhered veneer have been simplified with many of the major requirements now found in a one or two tables. A tributary area method was added for engineered design of anchored veneer as well as guidance for modeling anchored veneer in a full engineered design. Both the prescriptive and engineered provisions for adhered veneer were enhanced. Learn how to design masonry veneer with the new provisions and determine where your specifications need to be upgraded to meet the new requirements. Also learn about updated installation and inspection requirements and allowable tolerances for both types of veneer in construction. The updated requirements will simplify the design of your masonry veneer projects and assure the most efficient design methods are being used.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about the updated prescriptive requirements for anchored veneer including appropriate wind loading and deflection of backing requirements as well as requirements for veneer ties and their spacing.
- Review new rational design methods for anchored veneer using the Engineered Design Methods: Tributary Area Method and Engineering Analysis Method.
- Learn about the updated prescriptive requirements for adhered veneer including unit limitations, mortar material requirements and required system components.
- Discuss needed updates to project specifications

Rational Design of Masonry Veneers and Shelf Angle Supports
Chapter 12 of the TMS 402 2016 includes provisions for the design of anchored and adhered masonry veneer. Although the vast majority of anchored masonry veneer systems are designed using the prescriptive provisions within this standard, veneers in high wind zones, high seismic zones, or constructed with large distances between the backing walls and the veneer cannot be designed using these prescriptive provisions. In addition, the prescriptive provisions do not often provide the most cost-effective solutions for the rehabilitation and retrofit of masonry veneers. The TMS 402 does have provisions for alternative rational design provisions for masonry veneers. These provisions are explained and a method for the rational veneer wall system design are presented. This lesson also describes a method for the design of the vertical Shelf angle support of the walls systems.

This lesson provides an overview of why special inspection of masonry is required, what needs to be inspected, and how often inspection is typically provided based on requirements in various codes, standards, and guides. Basic special inspection requirements for various masonry tasks are reviewed, and expectations on a special inspector are discussed. Requirements for testing certification of Special inspectors are briefly reviewed, along with texts, websites, and guides that may be of use to special inspectors in the field.
