Description
Nondestructive evaluation methods are valuable approaches for evaluating conditions of existing masonry construction without causing damage. Masonry strength can also be measured in place using in situ test methods, without resorting to destructive sample removal for laboratory testing. Methods discussed during this lesson include mortar hardness testing, pulse velocity measurements, surface penetrating radar, infrared thermography, flatjack testing, and in situ shear tests, with special emphasis on applying these methods for diagnosing both historic and modern masonry construction. This lesson also covers the process of planning an investigation following published codes and guidelines.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe key design properties needed for retrofit or renovation of existing masonry structures.
- Define nondestructive and minimally invasive masonry evaluation techniques.
- Identify 2 methods for locating grout and reinforcement in modern masonry construction.
- Plan the number of tests needed for evaluating in situ masonry strength.

This session reviews masonry materials commonly used in cladding systems between the 1880 and 1945 in North America, including brick, terra cotta, concrete masonry, cast stone, natural stone, and mortar. Common material properties, uses, and deterioration mechanisms will be presented.
It is recommended that attendees watch Masonry 101 – Introduction to Masonry Units before watching this webinar in order to become familiar with the terminology used. Purchasing this course also provides free access to that course.
During Existing Masonry Night School: Assessment, Maintenance, and Repair of Transitional Masonry Structures, instructors discuss the most common issues in assessing, maintaining, and where needed, repairing masonry cladding systems constructed in North America between the 1880 and 1945.

Anchor Bolt Design
This lesson covers the basis for these changes two major changes to the anchor bolt design provisions in the 2016 edition of TMS 402. One change was to increase the calculated shear crushing strength by 67%. The other change was to go from a linear interaction equation for combined bending and shear to an elliptical interaction equation.
