Description
Sustainable design and green building are ever evolving. LEED version 4, introduced in late 2013, contains significant changes in the area of Materials and Resources. Masonry expert, Christine A. Subasic, P.E., LEED A.P., provides an overview of the LEEDTM v4 Rating System. This lesson will address LEED v4 credit categories, with particular emphasis on the Materials and Resources credits, and identify how masonry products can contribute to sustainable design and LEED. This lesson will also discuss the ways sustainable design goes beyond the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System and give insight on the environmental building marketplace, as well as cover criteria and considerations used in selecting masonry products for LEED projects.
Learning Objectives:
- Provide an overview of the LEED v4 BD+C New Construction Rating System
- Understand the changes in the Materials and Resources credit category in LEED v4
- Explain sustainable design strategies and LEED strategies that utilize masonry
- Identify elements of sustainable design that are not always part of green building rating systems

The TMS 402/602-16 (formerly designated as TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5 and TMS 602/ASCE 530.1/ASCE 6) has been released and adopted by the 2018 edition of the International Building Code and International Residential Code for the design and construction of structural masonry, masonry veneer, and glass unit masonry.
This lesson provides updates for the major updates and changes to the 2016 TMS 402/602, with a short review on changes that will be made in the 2018 International Building Code’s masonry provisions. The 1.5 hour video is presented by Dr. Richard M. Bennett, Chair of the Committee that developed these provisions.
This lesson is intended for designers, contractors, and others to help them understand the main updates made to these codes and standards from the earlier TMS 402/602-13 and the 2015 IBC. It is assumed that the user has familiarity with those earlier documents.

Rational Design of Masonry Veneers and Shelf Angle Supports
Chapter 12 of the TMS 402 2016 includes provisions for the design of anchored and adhered masonry veneer. Although the vast majority of anchored masonry veneer systems are designed using the prescriptive provisions within this standard, veneers in high wind zones, high seismic zones, or constructed with large distances between the backing walls and the veneer cannot be designed using these prescriptive provisions. In addition, the prescriptive provisions do not often provide the most cost-effective solutions for the rehabilitation and retrofit of masonry veneers. The TMS 402 does have provisions for alternative rational design provisions for masonry veneers. These provisions are explained and a method for the rational veneer wall system design are presented. This lesson also describes a method for the design of the vertical Shelf angle support of the walls systems.

Nondestructive Evaluation and Testing of Masonry
Nondestructive evaluation methods are valuable approaches for evaluating conditions of existing masonry construction without causing damage. Masonry strength can also be measured in place using in situ test methods, without resorting to destructive sample removal for laboratory testing.
