Description
After selecting masonry as a system for a project, a designer is faced with many choices of materials. For mortar and grout, one of the key ingredients is cement. With so many cementitious products available in the market, it can be difficult to know which ones are right for your project. It’s therefore essential to have a clear understanding of cement specifications that are referenced in mortar and grout standards. This lesson reviews current cementitious materials that are allowed by ASTM mortar (C270) and grout (C476) specifications, provides a description of each type of cement, discusses key properties of mortar and grout, and shows how to specify cements for mortar and grout efficiently and effectively.

Rational Design of Masonry Veneers and Shelf Angle Supports
Chapter 12 of the TMS 402 2016 includes provisions for the design of anchored and adhered masonry veneer. Although the vast majority of anchored masonry veneer systems are designed using the prescriptive provisions within this standard, veneers in high wind zones, high seismic zones, or constructed with large distances between the backing walls and the veneer cannot be designed using these prescriptive provisions. In addition, the prescriptive provisions do not often provide the most cost-effective solutions for the rehabilitation and retrofit of masonry veneers. The TMS 402 does have provisions for alternative rational design provisions for masonry veneers. These provisions are explained and a method for the rational veneer wall system design are presented. This lesson also describes a method for the design of the vertical Shelf angle support of the walls systems.

It describes the purpose of mortar joining masonry units and the desirable properties of fresh and hardened mortar. It describes the materials that comprise mortar and explains how mortars are specified, batched, and mixed. Mixing considerations necessarily include good practices for hot and cold weather construction and the additional care required for colored mortar, both for materials and mixing requirements. This lesson briefly describes quality assurance and quality control for mortar, the difference between QA and QC, and typical reporting requirements related to that.
