Masonry Educators’ Workshop 2022
The Masonry Educators’ Workshop (MEW) provides educators with the resources and background needed to effectively teach masonry, especially at the college and university level. This workshop was presented virtually June 21-23, 2022. The workshop is targeted towards educators at North American colleges and universities who teach or will be teaching masonry in architecture, engineering, and construction management. While those teaching actual masonry construction, or those outside of North America may find value in some topics, the focus will be teaching masonry design, detailing, construction, and maintenance/repair to undergraduate and graduate students preparing to be architects, architectural engineers, civil/structural engineers and construction managers using primarily U.S. based codes and standards. New faculty will find the workshop of value as they plan and prepare to teach masonry, and existing faculty will learn updates to codes, standards, materials, and practices that their students should be aware of.

Achieving Resilience: How Masonry Supports Resilient Designs
This course provides an overview of resilient design and discusses how resilient design is and is not covered by building codes and standards. The role of masonry construction in meeting resilient design goals is explained, and the inherent properties of masonry that make it resilient are described. Examples of resilient design strategies are provided.
Learning Objectives:
- Define resilience.
- Explain how resilient designs go beyond the minimum building code requirements.
- List at least three above-code standards that can be used with resilient designs.
- Describe inherent properties of masonry that provide resilience.

Structural Masonry Detailing: Confined Lap Splices
Most designers who engineer reinforced masonry know that code provisions for lap splice lengths have been evolving over the past few code editions. This course provides an overview of a newer confinement-steel option that has the potential to significantly reduce the lap splice lengths, especially for larger diameter bars, through confinement of the structural reinforcement.

The TMS 402/602-16 (formerly designated as TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5 and TMS 602/ASCE 530.1/ASCE 6) has been released and adopted by the 2018 edition of the International Building Code and International Residential Code for the design and construction of structural masonry, masonry veneer, and glass unit masonry.
This lesson provides updates for the major updates and changes to the 2016 TMS 402/602, with a short review on changes that will be made in the 2018 International Building Code’s masonry provisions. The 1.5 hour video is presented by Dr. Richard M. Bennett, Chair of the Committee that developed these provisions.
This lesson is intended for designers, contractors, and others to help them understand the main updates made to these codes and standards from the earlier TMS 402/602-13 and the 2015 IBC. It is assumed that the user has familiarity with those earlier documents.

Design of Movement and Control Joints for Masonry
This lesson addresses the movement characteristics of masonry wall systems, and compares the differences between architectural veneer and structural reinforced masonry. Focus is on best practice for design and construction of expansion and control joints to accommodate and/or restrict masonry material movement.
