Description
Special inspection is increasingly being required on structural masonry construction projects, and it will likely become commonplace in the coming years. Minimum requirements for Special Inspection and Quality Assurance of masonry recently were updated and modified in TMS 402/602-16. This lesson will overview special inspection, review changes, and highlight key inspection tasks. Tips for preparing a quality assurance plan by the design team will be given, and key inspection items will be reviewed so that contractors and inspectors understand the importance of ensuring compliance of these items.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify key elements of the building code related to masonry construction and inspection
- Interpret the IBC and TMS 402.602 as they relate to special inspection of masonry construction
- Evaluate construction and field inspection techniques
- Recognize the critical elements of structural masonry inspection

Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforcement in concrete was first introduced over 25 years ago by way of ACI 440R, but prior to TMS 402/602 2022, no companion guidelines existed for masonry construction. The new Appendix D of TMS 402/602 is a first standard in the U.S. for the use of GFRP reinforcement in masonry. GFRP reinforcement has applications in masonry for specialty use near electromagnetic equipment and in locations exposed to severe environments. Learn how to use the new Appendix D to design and specify GFRP reinforced masonry for your next project.

$80.00 Add to cartTMS 402/602-22 Review #1: Overview of Changes in TMS 402/602-22 and Review of the Specification for Masonry Structures
This course reviews the major changes from the 2016 edition to the 2022 edition of TMS 402/602. The 2022 edition was created using the first six-year revision cycle, allowing more comprehensive consideration of significant changes and reorganization of these Masonry Standards. In addition to reviewing the changes to the standards, this presentation reviews the Specification for Masonry Structures (TMS 602) and discusses the importance of why designers should be aware of how masonry is constructed.
Learning Objectives:
- Evaluate and utilize Masonry Standard updates
- Specify documents that are consistent with the current code
- Organize construction documents to be consistent with current codes and standards
- Recognize issues related to masonry construction

Rational Design of Masonry Veneers and Shelf Angle Supports
Chapter 12 of the TMS 402 2016 includes provisions for the design of anchored and adhered masonry veneer. Although the vast majority of anchored masonry veneer systems are designed using the prescriptive provisions within this standard, veneers in high wind zones, high seismic zones, or constructed with large distances between the backing walls and the veneer cannot be designed using these prescriptive provisions. In addition, the prescriptive provisions do not often provide the most cost-effective solutions for the rehabilitation and retrofit of masonry veneers. The TMS 402 does have provisions for alternative rational design provisions for masonry veneers. These provisions are explained and a method for the rational veneer wall system design are presented. This lesson also describes a method for the design of the vertical Shelf angle support of the walls systems.
