This lesson will review the basics of masonry unit production and properties with a specific focus on those items inspectors and construction personnel would need to know about or confirm. Common concrete masonry units and clay masonry units will be discussed, along with key differences in these materials. Limitations on manufacturing that need to be understood by those using the units will be discussed.

This lesson is designed to provide a thorough understanding of mortar for new masonry construction, especially as it pertains to the responsibilities of a Special Inspector. It describes the purpose of mortar joining masonry units and the desirable properties of fresh and hardened mortar. It describes the materials that comprise mortar and explains how mortars are specified, batched, and mixed. Mixing considerations necessarily include good practices for hot and cold weather construction and the additional care required for colored mortar, both for materials and mixing requirements. This lesson briefly describes quality assurance and quality control for mortar, the difference between QA and QC, and typical reporting requirements related to that.

Special Inspection of Structural Masonry #5 – Grout
This lesson is designed to provide a thorough understanding of grout for new masonry construction, especially as it pertains to the responsibilities of a Special Inspector. It describes the purpose of grout for masonry construction, both fine and coarse, as well as conventional and self-consolidating mixes, and desirable properties for all of these. It describes the materials that comprise grout and explains how grouts are specified, batched, mixed, and placed. Test methods for grout and preparation of test specimens are explained.

This lesson will review the basics of masonry construction so that those observing or accessing that construction are aware of common procedures and practices. Tolerances of units and construction will be reviewed so that those constructing masonry, or judging that construction know whether the resulting work is reasonable and within common tolerances. Movement joints including control joints and expansion joints will also be reviewed as to why they may be needed, what is important to make them function properly, and how they are commonly constructed.

Special Inspection of Structural Masonry #7 – Reinforcing and Grouting
This lesson will discuss how reinforcement and grout are placed in masonry walls and special precautions needed to ensure they are properly placed so that the reinforced masonry system performs properly. This includes tolerances on placement of reinforcement, and the cleanliness of spaces to be filled with grout. In addition, requirements to ensure adequate cover and protection to reinforcement to avoid corrosion of damage are reviewed.

This lesson is design to provide an understanding of the effects of hot and cold weather on masonry construction, especially as it pertains to the responsibilities of a Special Inspector. It defines conditions that are considered either hot or cold. As it relates to protecting new masonry, this lesson explains steps that should be taken by the contractor (and verified by the inspector) to prepare for construction, to do during construction, and to do immediately following construction.

Special Inspection of Structural Masonry #9 – Testing
This lesson will review common masonry tests and sampling methods as well as when such test may be appropriate and required by the Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs. Common errors in testing will be discussed to try to reduce such errors from being replicated in the future. Destructive and non-destructive tests and evaluation methods will briefly be reviewed for situations where construction testing was not performed, was not performed properly, or when results are suspect.

Strength Design of Masonry – All Lessons
This 6-session course will introduce strength design of masonry, review code requirements, and examine designs of common masonry elements including, beams, walls, columns, and pilasters. Design methodology will be reviewed, as will design for flexure, axial loads, and in-plane loads. The course will conclude with a review of requirements for reinforcement and connectors and detailing masonry effectively. This course is an excellent way to learn strength design procedures. Those taking the course should have a basic familiarity with masonry (consistent with content presented in the Masonry 101 Series).
